What Is Tallow?
Tallow is a natural fat rendered from the suet or kidney fat of cows. It is used in skincare for its moisturizing properties. Packed with fatty acids, tallow helps moisturize, heal, and protect the skin. Tallow is bio-compatible, meaning its fatty acids and nutrients closely match those of our skin, making it highly effective for maintaining a healthy, glowing complexion.
Does Tallow smell stinky?
Our tallow is dry-rendered once from grass-fed suet, preserving its skin-loving nutrients and natural profile. Because we avoid over-processing our tallow, it retains a natural scent, which many describe as buttery or nutty. This scent fades quickly once applied to the skin. The nourishing benefits of tallow, which support the skin’s natural microbiome, far outweigh any scent, making it a wonderful natural moisturizer.
However, if you prefer to avoid the natural tallow scent, we offer a variety of scented Whipped Tallow options that leave your skin smelling fresh.
Are your products safe for sensitive skin types?
Our Tallow Products are gentle and nourishing, making them a great choice for even sensitive skin types. Tallow’s naturally rich fatty acid profile supports skin health and is well-tolerated by most skin types. However, if you purchase or use our products containing essential oils, please note that they may cause reactions in some individuals. As with any new product, we recommend performing a patch test before full application. Simply apply a small amount to your skin and monitor for a few hours for any adverse reactions. If you have specific skin conditions or concerns, please consult a healthcare professional before use.
Is Tallow safe to use on acne prone skin?
Tallow has a comedogenic rating of 2 (on a 0-5 scale), meaning it may clog pores for some with acne-prone skin, depending on individual skin type. While its fatty acid profile can be slightly comedogenic, tallow’s antimicrobial triglycerides may benefit others by restoring a compromised skin barrier, potentially improving acne. Results vary, so we recommend a patch test to see how your skin responds.
How to store and use Tallow?
To keep your Tallow products fresh and effective, store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Tallow can melt when temperatures exceed 80°F, so avoid leaving it in hot environments. Always keep the lid tightly closed and prevent water from entering the jar to maintain product quality. Use clean, dry hands or a spatula to scoop out the product, applying a small amount to your skin as needed.
If your Tallow arrives melted due to warm shipping conditions, don’t worry—it’s still perfectly safe to use! You can place it in the refrigerator to resolidify and use it as a balm. If you’d prefer, contact us for instructions on melting it down for rewhipping.
Will Tallow help extra dry skin?
Yes, tallow is wonderful for extra dry skin! Its rich fatty acid profile is bio-compatible to your skin, deeply nourishing and moisturizing to relieve dryness and restore softness. To maximize hydration, apply tallow to damp skin or mist your skin with a hydrosol before application to lock in extra moisture. For added benefits, incorporate our Tallow Sugar Scrub into your shower routine. This scrub gently exfoliates, removing dry or dead skin while smoothing and moisturizing, leaving your skin soft and refreshed.
